Killing The Fear Factor in Business Startups

6 Flares 6 Flares ×

Fear is the greatest impediment to success! It is an obstacle to realization of personal goals. Fear is a major hurdle to cross in business startups. Anyone who cannot conquer his fears can hardly make any headway in life, because fear keeps telling you that you cannot make it and that you are likely to fail.

Have you ever wondered why you have not started that your new building, married your new wife, acquired your academic degree, bought a piece of land or even changed your job yet? They are all due to the fear of failing!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson

You can see from the above quote, that your failure to succeed does not only hurt you, but it hurts others too. If you start a business today and succeed, you will not be the only beneficiary, other people would benefit from your success. You are actually keeping some people in bondage for not succeeding.

How does fear manifest?

Fear manifests in different forms and tries to stop us from achieving our dreams and set goals. Yielding to the fear would mean forfeiting those beautify dreams and then ending up without any results to show. So some of the ways fear tries to stop us include but are not limited to the following:

1. Inability to take a step:

Fear keeps presenting a picture of danger before you each time you think of making a move forward. It’s like telling you there’s a deep pit you are likely to fall into if you moved in the direction you want to go. In the business sphere, fear tells you you would lose all the money you’ve managed to save over the years. What happens next? You become over cautious, you go on the defensive. You see failures rather than successes awaiting you, and then you try to avoid investing.

2. Being satisfied with yourself:

Have you ever seen a man who’s so satisfied with his present condition? He’s not really satisfied, he is just afraid to take the next step. The only way to subconsciously rationalize his position is to tell you he’s satisfied where he is. Nobody is really satisfied playing the second fiddle or being mediocre. We all want to aspire higher and get better certificates, more achievements, more business growth, more money, etc. But fears can really hinder us from progressing.

3. Giving excuses:

The next thing fear does is to make you advance excuses for everything you are unable to do. If you can’t set up your dream business, there would always be excuses for not doing so. You could just keep telling people you are not yet ready for that, getting a business for now is not necessary, there is no time to concentrate and run the business if it is set up, a lot of business startups are failing, etc. Those excuses might seem acceptable but are they really genuine enough to stop you from starting a business today?

4. Threatens your pride:

Taylor Swift once said ”I am intimidated by the fear of being average”. Fear of failing in your business startups could indirectly be a threat to your pride or ego. What happens to your pride should you fail? How would people see you? Would they still respect you or simply see you as a never-do-well? Because you do not want to lose your pride, you simply suppress the desire for a new business startup or venture into new areas.

Few examples of successful business startups

1. McDonald:

You must have heard about McDonald and their exploits in the food industry and your reaction would have been, Wow! These guys are simply fantastic! But you never remember to ask if McDonald just came from the blues or they started somewhere, someday as a small business.

According to Wikipedia, McDonald was opened by Patrick McDonald as a food stand in 1937 in Huntington Drive; but by 1953, his two sons had begun to franchise the restaurant and it started to spread across some states. Today, you cannot mention Hamburger without mentioning the McDonalds. He started small; he killed his fears and took the bulls by the horns.

2. Facebook:

We all love Facebook. Everybody wants to join the social network today because of its success. But how did Facebook really start? Mark Zuckerberg started something small while still a psychology student at Harvard University. But in 2004, he graduated from CourseMatch and FaceMash to Facebook. Another good business startup that came as a result of taking initiative and matching it with action.

I could just go on and on to mention several business startups that were a product of overcoming fears and going in the direction your mind leads you. If those founders had allowed fear to deter them, those businesses would never exist today.

What to do in the face of fears

If you leave fear alone, it would cripple you. You therefore must do something to take away your fears and achieve your set goals. Killing the fear factor in business startups is one important step we must take in order to make a headway in starting a new business. But what should we do when confronted with the afore-mentioned problems?

1. Acknowledge the fear:

The first step toward overcoming fear is to acknowledge its existence. A problem identified is a problem half solved. Denying its existence would at best help you lead a pretentious life and never face reality. That does not, and would never solve an existing problem. Once you own up you are facing some fears, then you have helped yourself to face reality and look for a solution to the problem.

2. Overcome your mind:

Fears come from your mind. So to overcome the fears, you need to overcome your mind and the negative things it tells you. “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Nelson Mandela.

There would always be fear, because fear keeps telling you to be on the precautionary side. But its advice is over done; it is somehow morbid, and glues you to a stop. Take the courage to say ‘NO’ to what your mind says and tell it you can succeed if you start a new business today.

3. Focus on your dream:

Focus more on your dreams and less on fears, failure, danger, inadequacies, incompetence, etc. The more you focus on your dream, the closer you get to realizing them. [tweetable]“Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back, a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country” – Annais Nin[/tweetable]. If you could just launch your new dream business today, you could be another Mark Zuckerberg or the McDonalds.

4. Take the risk:

Life is about risks. Everything in life involves one form of risk or the other. Even eating has its own risk. So why are you afraid to take risks? Business startups are risky also, but the risks are well worth it. Those who never achieve anything in life are those who never take a risk. Do you know that going to school, starting a blog, marriage, travelling, etc are all risky? But risky as they are, people still go into them and come out with great, enviable results.

5. Look at others:

One good way to overcome your fears and move on with your business startups is to look at those who have succeeded in their various niches and encourage yourself that you too can do well if you took the bold step. Do you agree with me on this?

I used to be afraid of punishments whenever I defaulted in my assignments as a pupil/student. The only way I learnt to take courage and overcome fear was to watch my fellow students receive the strokes of the cane and take note of those who didn’t cry. I would then say to myself that I could do it just like those who were strong. Just take a look around and see the countless businesses flourishing out there. Say to yourself that if the owners of those businesses could make it, then you can make it also.

Conclusion

Fear is a dream killer; only those who learn to overcome fear actually become achievers in life. Take care of your fears, launch your business startups today and you never can tell what they would bring back tomorrow.

There would always be fears, but the only way not to be incapacitated by them is to take a bold step, overcome your mind and go on with your conviction. You will surely have a good testimony tomorrow.
